Although there has been a great deal of focus in the last several months on the drought in Texas, including on our website, Mexico is also experiencing record drought. Last year was reported to be the driest in Texas since 1917, and just next door in the Mexican state of Coahuila, things are much the same. Streams are drying up and livestock dying, and as this Wall Street Journal article reports, crops have been lost in an area larger than the state of Connecticut—more than 3.7 million acres.
Although loss of crops and lack of grass for cattle to survive are serious problems, one of the most immediate effects of the long-term drought has been the shortage of drinking water. Just as this Texas community imported water, on a much larger scale the Mexican government is delivering hundreds of millions of liters of water to hundreds of communities.
The drought has affected 19 of Mexico’s 31 states. Little relief is expected in the next few months, with less-than-average rainfall predicted for most states.
